Stylophora coral, or Cats Paw Coral are a branching small polyp stony coral otherwise known as SPS from the Family Pocilloporidae. Stylophora are less commonly seen than other varieties SPS for sale. This coral makes a great addition to any high light, high flow reef system.

Husbandry

The Stylophora Coral can live under a variety of lighting conditions ranging from power compacts, VHO, T-5’s and up to the more intense metal halides. You will need to alter their position in the aquarium depending on the lighting. In aquariums lit by metal halides, a mid to low position is an ideal placement choice. Under other types of lighting, a mid to high position is ideal. To see the most intense coloration of this coral, we recommend the use of Metal halide lighting. For good health, the addition of a two part calcium and buffer supplement to maintain optimum calcium & dKH levels is necessary. Stylophora also benefit greatly from micro-plankton foods available for filter feeding invertebrates.

The Stylophora genus has been propagated extensively in captivity its become an excellent candidate for aquaculture. Due to the many varieties of branching SPS, Stylophora coral take on completely different shapes and colors depending on their location on the reef. Large colonies can sometimes struggle when placed in a new reef tank. Starting with frags of SPS and letting them grow to a particular reef setup is an excellent idea. Large colonies can experience some die-off in a new aquarium during acclimation.
