Leptos are a small polyp stony (SPS) coral from the Solomon Islands that are usually found growing from vertical or overhung reef walls. This species will grow in an encrusting fashion and have a wide range of coloration varieties. Under the right conditions, this is a fast growing species. Although it has short tentacles, it can harm other invertebrates touching it.
Leptoseris became popular a few years ago when bright orange color morphs blew everyone away with their intense fluorescence. They are one of the most dazzling corals under actinic lighting because they almost take on a metallic appearance.
Water & Lighting Requirements
Leptoseris are highly adaptable to different lighting systems but do change colors to compensate. These corals do very well in shaded areas of the reef. We suggest keeping the coral in a low to medium flow area of the reef aquarium. Excessive flow could cause this particular species to become stressed and not extend fully. Leptoseris have small mouths and cannot feed on large particles. Therefore, in our experience, Leptoseris is a challenging coral to feed and most attempts up to this point have been unsuccessful.
