Husbandry

Caulastrea are a Large Polyp Stony Coral (LPS) commonly referred to as Candy Cane Coral. Candy Cane Corals are one of the staples in reef-keeping and have been aquacultured for decades. The round polyps are seen in a variety of colors including green, yellow, or blue and violet. In some varieties, striped and polychromatic patterns are observed in these hardy corals. Caulastrea are generally peaceful corals producing shorter (typically less than one inch) sweeper tentacles. These corals will grow in a branching formation and can be fragmented easily.

Lighting and Placement

Most of the caulastrea varieties will display fluorescence under actinic lighting.  Caulastrea will require moderate and indirect lighting, however, can be acclimated to more intense lighting over periods of time. Care should be taken in placing caulastrea to avoid direct placement in front of powerhead flow or the polyps will not expand.

Candy cane corals are hardy and peaceful, extending their short feeder tentacles to capture offerings of food. Caulastrea will rely on their zooxanthellae for the majority of their nutrition, although they can benefit from direct feedings of microplankton or brine shrimp.
