Lobophyllia are one of the classic corals that veteran reefkeepers have clamored over since the beginning stages of the hobby. Often referred to as an open brain, lobed brain, meat coral, or lobos the lobophyllia make beautiful additions to the reef. Lobophyllia are not difficult to maintain in the reef aquarium, however, they thrive under certain water parameters. It is not uncommon to see football sized lobophyllia colonies in mature and stable aquariums. With their beautiful colorations and lobed texture, these LPS corals can create a gorgeous centerpiece in the reef aquarium.
Lobophyllia have been collected from waters in the Red Sea, as well as the Indo-Pacific, Japan and Australia regions. At present, lobophyllia in the aquarium trade are harvested from Australian waters. In nature, lobophyllia can be found in upper reef slope areas and lagoons where they are more protected from crashing waves and currents.
Lobophyllia will thrive in cooler water temperatures ranging from 75°-78°F. Although they may tolerate warmer temperatures closer to 80°F, experience shows that the brilliance in color may be lost in these corals under warmer temperatures. Lobophyllia prefer moderate to strong water flow and moderate lighting. They are considered one of the easiest LPS corals to keep and are a great addition to any aquarium. Alkalinity should be kept between 8 and 9 and Calcium between 400 and 450 for optimal growth.
Feeding lobophyllia is quite easy to do as they regularly accept a multitude of different foods. Chopped mysis shrimp, zooplankton, chopped fish, chopped krill are just some of the many foods that lobos will readily accept. Feed when tentacles are out, we find that a small dose of aminos or phytoplankton added to the water will usually entice a rapid feeding response.
